During World War I the Chasseurs Alpins were well known French soldiers. They first gained attention when their unique training and alpine knowledge was counted on to break the stalemate of trench warfare in their native region of the French Alps.
Their distinctive blue uniform with flowing cape and jaunty beret captured the public's imagination, and they became known as "les Diables Bleus,"
-"The Blue Devils."
In 1923, the nickname "Blue Devil" was first used by General John J. Pershing in reference to the spirited play CHS exhibited against Phillips High in Birmingham, and was then adopted as the mascot for the CHS sports teams. |
